As of July 2022, there are approximately 14,500 ethical drugs (approximately 21,500 items) registered as JAPIC ethical drug package insert information data. Each of them has a pharmacological analysis, and we must theoretically practice drug treatment after understanding the mechanism. The pharmacist's habit is “what is the mechanism of the drug?”, and the effects and side effects are evaluated at the same time from that mechanism.
By the time the drug was approved, a set of data on the efficacy and pharmacology of the drug had been released. The clinical trial will target selected patients who meet the conditions and evaluate their efficacy and safety. Therefore, it is not uncommon for unexpected side effects to occur after approval, and we must evaluate it thoroughly. On the other hand, there are good things as well as bad things. It has been reported that new indications will be added even after approval, and the range of drug treatment will be expanded. In other words, there are cases where it leads to unexpected drug development.
In order to achieve such developmental development, medical professionals must always keep drug efficacy and pharmacology in mind and carefully monitor patients after administration. It is no exaggeration to say that clinical strength depends on how well you have a basic understanding of drug treatment. In this symposium, I would like to discuss the importance of acquiring basic thinking in pharmacology by giving concrete examples in clinical practice.
